rotary kilns, otherwise called as rotary calciners, are tube-shaped devices that are used as pyroprocessors. This means they are used to heat certain solid materials up to a certain temperature in order to produce chemicals or to effect chemical reactions. Some of the most common uses of the rotary kilns are the following

1. Producing cement. - One of the most familiar uses of the kilns is in the production of cement. In fact, perhaps the most common idea of people about rotating kilns is from seeing cement trucks with continuously rotating concrete mixers attached on their backs. Rotary kilns for cement production operate in the same way the rotary cement kilns, or simply, cement kilns, heat the raw materials for cement to produce what manufacturers call "clinkers." The kilns are directly fired or heated to maintain a certain temperature, and the process can either be a wet or dry process. The latter is more preferred because it eliminates evaporation. Using cement kilns enables manufacturers to produce cement at a continuous pace and with minimal production costs. At the end of the day, the lowered production costs of cement using rotary kilns benefit the consumers because it lowers the costs of construction.

2. Producing gypsum. - Similarly, rotating kilns are also used to produce gypsum, another stable in industrial materials. The kilns are used this time to remove water that may be found in finely-ground gypsum. The indirect heat applied to the gypsum removes impurities and water with ease and speed.

3. Reclaiming nickel deposits. - Yet another use for the kilns is for recovering nickel deposits from electronic waste. Some companies make their own, customized kiln designs that are specifically intended to be used in recycling disposed electronic materials. These companies are able to reclaim (and later on reuse) nickel from discarded electronic waste such as wires, automobile parts, and old gadgets. Not only does it give an opportunity for profit, recycling nickel using the kilns also prevent toxic wastes from entering the soil and harming the environment.

4. Use of kilns in ships. - As mentioned earlier, finding unorthodox uses for the kilns is testament to the resourcefulness and ingenuity of men. One unorthodox use of rotating kilns is its application in providing security for ships. There are companies who produce optronics or surveillance materials specifically designed for ships. The surveillance materials help in securing the ships from pirates as well as a supplement to its tracking and measuring devices to improve accuracy in navigating the ships. Rotating kilns with infrared scanners are used by these ships to spot thermal spots indicative of movement. It serves as an early warning device and a signal for the ship management to investigate further.
